Growing the Game of Basketball in Middlebury Vermont
Our Mission
The Middlebury Basketball Association (MBA) is dedicated to supporting youth and high school basketball programs by building a strong basketball community that embraces inclusivity, enhances teamwork and encourages sportsmanship.
Who We Are
Established in 2023, the MBA is registered 501(c)3 non-profit membership organization that is led by a volunteer board of directors. The directors are parents, coaches, and supporters of basketball in our community. They represent kids of all ages, multiple towns in the district, and players of both genders. The board meets monthly and welcomes input from the community. The current board of directors are: Bryan Phelps (President), Cindy Atkins (Vice President), Josh Quinn (Treasurer), Mark Orten (Secretary), Jennifer Barnes, Karen Duguay, Stephanie Kellogg, Casey McDonough, Seth Riney, Kyle Lussier, and Jamie Simpson. The board works and collaborates with the Middlebury Recreation Department, the MUMS athletic department and coaches, and the MUHS athletic departments and coaches.
What We Do
We aim to foster a love for the sport, to cultivate athletic skill, to promote positivity throughout the programs, to encourage personal growth and to subsidize developmental opportunities among aspiring basketball players through administrative collaboration, communication, community outreach, volunteering, and fundraising.
We aspire to empower young athletes by investing in their development with skills and resources to excel both on and off the court, preparing them for success in basketball and life.
Player Development Opportunities
Mini-metro
Opportunity for ACSD grades 5th – 8th boys and girls interested in working on their basketball skills and playing more games. Mini-metro basketball has been around for more than 30 years and is run by Vermont Cats Basketball Club. This is a competitive program and may require tryouts depending on levels of participation. We work in conjunction with our HS Varsity coaches and have both boys and girls teams. Games are every Sunday starting the first week of November through the first week in February. Practices during the school/rec basketball season will not conflict with school or rec practice or game schedules. We work on fostering a positive environment and focus on skill and team development. The Middlebury Basketball Association provides uniforms. Registration fees are ~$75 per athlete. Players will need to travel for some games, we also host games in Middlebury at the Town gym. Parents will be asked to commit to volunteer for a minimum of two 1 hour shifts during the season on a Sunday when the games are hosted in Middlebury.
Fall Clinics
The MBA coordinates and promotes fall clinics for all ACSD 5th - 12th graders that take place on Sunday afternoon/evenings from September through November. We bring in local youth, past high school and middle school coaches, and Middlebury College coaches and players, to run fun skill building clinics to get athletes ready to start their seasons strong. The coaches volunteer their time and we use the Middlebury Town gym so there is no cost to participate!
AAU
The MBA helps promote any and all AAU opportunities that are available to athletes in the Middlebury area. We encourage AAU teams to schedule practices and games in the Spring and Summer in an effort to not overlap with the Mini-metro program as many of our athletes compete in both. Feel free to reach out to us about opportunities for specific age groups or to get more information on the process to start an AAU team.
Summer Camps/Clinics/Open Gyms
We coordinate and promote summer clinics and open gyms for all athletes from 5th-12th grade with an emphasis on skill development and fun! We also update our Summer Camp Opportunities page every Spring providing links to local and regional camp offerings all in one place.
